In the main exhibition the music of Finland is presented both from a historical and a wider cultural perspective. The history of the Finnish art music is described from a local point of view. From the Middle Ages up to the early 19th century Turku was the centre for music life in Finland, a fact that is also reflected in the history of the Sibelius Museum and it’s collections. An important part of the exhibition shows the prominent traits and the historical development of different types of musical instruments. Folk music items, and historical recording- and amplification devices are also part of the exhibition. In the year 2016 the instrument exhibition of the Sibelius Museum will be rebuilt.
